Unlock the Power of Hydration

It's no secret that staying hydrated is one of the indisputable cornerstones of health. Drinking enough water each day boosts our mood, sleep, and energy level. It improves our skin, aids digestion, and enhances mental clarity. We all know we need to hydrate. And yet...

…so many of us fall short in this department. Why? Well, for one, water is bland. It's boring. There are about a million other beverages vying for our consumption every day. Coffee? Soda? A spicy margarita? If my taste buds were choosing, I'd opt for all three of those over just plain old water any day of the week. With a little intention, however, and the help of these below tips, I’ve stayed consistently hydrated and learned how to make water more pleasurable to drink. Read on for seven easy tips to unlock the transformative power of hydration for yourself.

Seven Tips for Better Hydration

1.  Say Yes to Electrolytes

It turns out true hydration is not just about drinking water… it’s about replenishing with electrolytes. We need the added sodium, magnesium, and potassium to be able to properly replenish our bodies. The good news? There are so many high quality electrolyte powders on the market that actually make water taste better, too. The trick is to find one you actually like with the right ingredients and no added sweeteners. Ultima Replenisher has been the best I’ve tried and a total game changer for me. It has 0 carbs or calories, and is a perfect balance of calcium (65 mg), magnesium (100 mg), sodium (55 mg), zinc (1 mg), chloride (79 mg), potassium (250 mg), and has a hint of sweetness from stevia.

2. Hydrate First Thing

I try to drink 16-24 oz before breakfast. An easy way to do this? Bring a water bottle (not plastic!) with you on a morning walk. Boom, you’re getting morning sunlight, moving your body, and hydrating at the same time.

3. Level up with Collagen & Vitamin C

Two magical elixirs I cannot get enough of are the Beauty Collagen and Super Vitamin C Cocktail by Naturopathic Doctor Nigma Talib. Both are science-backed formulas that pack a powerful combination of vital nutrients to support optimal health and vitality.

I’ve been consuming both religiously since I began seeing Dr. Nigma in 2020. The Super Vitamin C Cocktail is my defense against any sort of illness (especially helpful during cold, flu, and covid season). It’s also a must when traveling. I drink 1-2 stick packs a day in 16-24 oz of water. The taste, the frothiness, and most importantly, the way it supports immunity have made this a must-have item in our house. Shake it up in a water bottle, pour it over a big ice cube in a crisp, nice glass and you almost forget you’re not having an actual cocktail…

With the Beauty Cocktail Collagen powder, I blend two scoops with 24-32 oz of filtered water and fresh (or frozen) strawberries. It is so frothy and delicious. I can’t recommend this enough!

4. Invest in a Water Filter or Home Filtration System

We installed a nice one from Beyond 02 in LA (an investment that really pays off over time) but a countertop pitcher is also great. Environmental Working Group (EWG) voted this and this as their top choices overall. Both were nearly 100 percent effective at removing the six contaminants most widespread in U.S. tap water (Chromium-6, PFAs or “Forever” Chemicals, Arsenic, TTHMs, Nitrates, and Radon). Read EWG’s just published guide to countertop filters here.

5. Carry a Water Bottle

When on the go, I like to keep a reusable water bottle with me all day. If I’m at home, I keep a water bottle (or large mason jar) at my desk. Choose one that is easy to carry, easy to refill, and easy to clean. I recently found these on Amazon. They’re glass, reasonably priced, and easy to tell when they need cleaning. I also love Larq. They make a self-cleaning water bottle that has a filter inside. For a less expensive version with a similar design, I like this one too.

6. Use a Water Tracking App

I have been loving WaterMinder. It calculates what water intake is right for you, which is important as it varies with age, gender, weight, diet quality, activity, and other factors like the climate where you live. There are plenty of other tracking apps out there so choose whichever works for you! I’ve found that tracking keeps me accountable and helps me hit my customized daily goal.

7. Monitor the "Fun" Beverages

Things like… coffee and alcohol. These can be dehydrating. WaterMinder will track these and their hydration impact for you.

And there you have it! Seven tips to try today for better, more consistent hydration.
